A UK based research group has developed metallic-ceramic composite panels made up of a pattern of ceramic and metallic inclusions, sealed in a metallic foam core, and protected with external stainless steel face sheets. The novel security product was tested against and defeated the latest generation of cutting tools used to breach security barriers. The group is looking for distributors that can supply the solution to end users or companies wishing to buy a production license.
Recent breakthroughs in battery technologies have enabled a new generation of portable cutting tools, which can defeat the majority of monolithic barriers available on the market, such as safe doors and security barriers. With the increase in plate thickness and material hardness weight of the door or barrier also escalates to a point where it needs a motor to operate. If the power source is cut, occupants cannot open the door due to its weight. The metallic-ceramic panels, developed in partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute, are made of ceramic inclusions that offer hardness to resist cutting tools. The geometry and pattern of these inclusions produce non-uniform material wear, which creates off-design loads on cutting tools. These loads destroy angle grinder blades and drills so that the cutting progress is stopped after only 10-15% penetration through the thickness. Water jet cutter flow is dispersed into a splash-like flow that defeats its cutting ability. The tests were carried out at the Centre for Applied Science and Technology of the Home Office in the UK. In addition, the developed panels weigh only 10-15% of steel plate with the same thickness. The panels can be produced according to the customer specifications with lightweight alternatives sought to resist forcible entry for at least 10 minutes. Commercial applications for this solution can be found in multiple fields, e.g. in the banking sector, for business security solutions and for protection of data centres, as well as in military-related niches. The group is looking for companies that are interested in supplying the solution to end customers in the different industries as well in buying production license.
