Offer description

The pioneering social enterprise based in the UK was set up to fill an existing gap in primary provision for teaching the key reading and collaborative problem-solving strategies that are essential life-skills for the 21st Century. Grown out of 10 years research and school trials, the enterprise delivers services and resources to schools and is committed to helping teachers fulfill the reading comprehension, transferable thinking and co-operative learning potential of children of all abilities. They have developed an innovative comprehension tool and resources to provide teachers/parents with the essential meta-learning steps that help young children towards independent use of inference, comprehension skills and questioning techniques to self-monitor their reading and understanding. The tool/resources is designed for ages 3 – 6 yrs for home/school use and the tool is based around a set of interactive bookmarks providing very young children with a playful structure for talking about picture books and exploring the pages for meaning and enjoyment. Accessible to teachers (cross-curricular resources) and families (workshop and interactive resources) the tool and teaching approach has been evaluated by experts and is endorsed by the National Literacy Trust’s Primary Advisor. The interactive bookmark provides prompts/ features that gently introduce children to memorable reading and life-long learning skills that help them to: • summarise – retell the main points of the story • predict – guess what may happen next • enquire – ask and answer questions about the characters and what is happening • clarify - make sense of unknown words, images and ideas Parents/teachers are supported with a series of workshops, lesson plans, activities , posters and guidance to help them to encourage their children to look, think, feel and search for meaning and ask their own questions and can be used to explore any choice of picture book, fiction or non-fiction. Innovations and advantages

Development of the innovative tool has been led by research/analysis of reading comprehension failures unsupported by the former National Primary Strategy and seeks to provide early steps to overcome ongoing failures in the primary years such as: • poor skimming and scanning skills and tendency to rely on memory only to respond to questions from the text, • poor knowledge of story structure and the different ways of gathering literal, inference and evaluation information from the text, • little understanding that the authors intention is presented as clues in the text, • failure to make links and connections from own experience with that of incoming new knowledge, • more literal than in-depth enquiry during reading, • poor interpretation skills due to limited knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. The comprehension tool/resources offered were devised to provide teachers/parents with the essential meta-learning steps that help young children towards independent use of inference, comprehension skills and questioning techniques to self-monitor their reading and understanding.
