A UK company manufacturing wind turbines currently operating only in tyhe UK market has developed an innovative turbine which maximises the power of the wind in changing wind conditions by altering the rotor speed which optimises the blade power coefficient. It is the only UK designed and built medium sized (60kW) turbine in the market designed to endure storms up to 155mph. This has been tested successfully on the west coast of Scotland. The variable speed drive system allows ultimate control of the rotor speed. In high wind events (above 25m/s) the rotor is programmed to ramp down in a controlled way eliminating the use of the main brake and reducing unnecessary stress. The rotor brake is located on the rotor shaft and does not produce stress to the gearbox when deployed. The installation does not require a crane or expensive road works due to its innovative tilt up, tilt down tower, thereby reducing the development costs. The turbine and components are all modular and can be transported internationally in standard shipping containers. A class II wind turbine with longer blades to maximise output in lower wind speed areas is also available. Four main features have been designed to protect the turbine: • Ultimate control using a variable speed drive • Discharging the energy to a braking resistor (on power loss) • Applying the fail safe rotor brake – ultimate stop (on power loss) • Independent mechanically sprung blade tip brakes.
