Annotation

A Korean manufacturer of steam methane reformer for hydrogen refueling system is seeking a partner with captured carbon dioxide utilization technology for their EUREKA project. The goal is to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions with carbon dioxide capture/storage technology (CCS) and carbon utilization technology (CCU) to be developed throughout the project. Partners with CCS have been found and the consortium is now seeking partner with carbon utilization technology.

Offer description

The hydrogen road maps issued by leading countries have contributed to the increase in the number of hydrogen-powered vehicles around the globe. However, although hydrogen is a carbon-free energy carrier, not everyone is convinced by hydrogen fueled cars as for the fact that steam reforming process still causes massive emissions of greenhouse gases. This continues to register an unprecedented surge in demand for 100% environmentally-friendly ways of producing hydrogen which includes renewable energy utilization, development of carbon dioxide reduction technology etc. ultimately leading to decarbonisation. Since establishment in 1998, the Korean company has been recognised as global leader for industrial fired heater, and develops/manufactures steam methane reforming system of natural gas/LPG for on-site hydrogen refueling station based on a national renewable energy policy. Currently, it is actively seeking carbon dioxide reduction technology to apply throughout the hydrogen production process, and this widely includes as followings : 1) CO2 capture/storage technology (CCS), 2) carbon utilization technology (CCU) and 3) steam plasma methane reforming technology. Aimed at reducing greenhouse gas, CO2 capture/storage technology (CCS) is the process of capturing wasted carbon dioxide mainly from energy or other energy-intensive sectors such as cement factory, power plants etc. Captured CO2 is then transported through a pipeline, truck, train, ship, etc and stored in three different ways : geological storage, ocean storage and chemical processes. Some issues, however, occur with the method of CO2 capture. Usually, the captured CO2 is stored in the empty space of stratum in the deep underground which is formed after oil and natural gas extraction. South Korea, however, as no geological structure suitable for storing the captured carbon dioxide due to the lack of oil and natural gas. This naturally leads to the growing demands for carbon capture utilisation technology (CCU). The captured carbon dioxide can be used in various fields, such as chemical raw materials, plastic powder, biofuel, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, through a chemical conversion process. For such reason, the Korean company wishes to develop technologies- CO2 capture/storage technology (CCS), carbon utilization technology (CCU)- throughout the global cooperation under EUREKA call in the year of 2021 targeting February thus, intends to close the issuance of EOIs (expression of interest) for partner search by November 30th of 2020. The project duration is expected to be up to 3 years including development and commercialization, and the brief summary of the project is as below: 1. Topic/Objective : Developing technology on CO2 capture and utilization 2. Consortia and its role : - (Korea) Government funded research institute : Developing CO2 capture technology (for on-site hydrogen generator) - (Korea) Korean company(the owner of the EEN profile): Applying technology and testing - (Netherlands): Developing storage technology that could be collaborated with the capture technology of the Korean research institute. - (Partner Sought): Captured CO2 utilization technology. Ways of utilization could be broadly divided by two, one is direct use of CO2 for such smart farm/green house, or even for marine microorganism production ultimately to produce bio-oil). Another way is CO2 chemical process which means converting CO2 into useful chemicals. HOWEVER at this point, it should be noted that amount of CO2 produced will not be much, as this project is targetting for ON-SITE hydrogen generator instead of OFF-SITE which deals with huge amount of CO2.
